Slogan Competitions

Slogan competitions are a more sophisticated and skilful form of consumer competition.  They are run by manufactures to make you think positively about the product and may be used in future promotions.  They usually require you to buy the product and include the qualifier with your entry.  You may also be asked a couple of related questions but these are usually simple and designed to make you look more closely at the product or promotion.

Writing Slogans

The slogan competition generally involves the phrase complete the following sentence in an "apt and original" manner. Such words usually strike fear into the non-comper, but they are the mark of real reward and an enhanced chance of winning if you can hit the right formula.  If possible study some previous winners as published by all competition promoters, competition magazines and competition websites e.g. Dot Comper has a searchable database of over 40,000 prize winning slogans.  By studying these, you will soon learn what the judges are looking for. Good slogans generally have rhyme, rhythm and preferably a pun, you must also make sure that you follow on from the opening line and flatter the promoter/product.  For further help with slogan writing visit Dot Comper or get hold of "How to Write Winning Slogans" by Brita Bevis.

Word Limitations

The competition details will usually ask you to complete the slogan in no more than a specified number of words.  You should adhere to this rigidly, and be very careful when it comes to using apostrophies.  Basic grammar skills apply get out those English exercise books. "Don't" is shorthand for "Do not" and therefore is two words, while "Can't" substitutes "Cannot" and is therefore one word. "It" is different. Used as a pronoun as in "Its flavour is wonderful", then "Its" is one word. However, "It's" is two words, when it is an abbreviation for "It is" as in "It's a pleasure to drive." Clear? Of course the judges may have forgotten all their "O" level English, but don't risk it unless you have a second back-up entry. A little refinement to your slogan within legal limits usually produces a better product, justifying the extra time.

lmproving Your Chances

If possible it is a good idea to make more than one entry, but do not sacrifice quality for quantity.  It is best to enter two carefully selected which express different styles e.g. humorous and sincere. If you are submitting multiple entries however, do be sure to check the terms and conditions, some of which state only one entry per household. In these cases friends and relatives are often willing to help out, at a price! Make sure you have supplied the correct qualifier, answered any questions and completed your slogan in the correct number of words.  Buy yourself a decent pen, write clearly and don’t make mistakes.  Entries which do not follow these simple rules will be disqualified.   Finally, remember the more obscure the competition, the fewer the entrants.  Buying that packet iguana eye drops might be a good investment after all!
