Skill-based Competitions

There are a number of different types of competition which use varying amounts of skill.  Here are some you may meet.

Spot the Ball

In these competitions you have to place a cross where the ball or other object was supposed to be on the picture. The position of the ball of object is not usually taken from a genuine photograph but is pre-determined by a panel of judges.

Spot the Difference

This is where you have to compare two  pictures and put a circle cross to mark the differences.  You are usually required to only mark one of the pictures, so make sure you do the right one!  Sometimes the number of differences is specified which makes it easier to complete.

Order of Merit

In this type of competition items or features have to have to be put into and order of importance. This will usually have been already decided by a panel of judges. e.g. ranking the features of a car or the quality of a list of novels.  The odds of getting the order correct are very slim particularly if there is a large number of options.  You can calculate the odds, as it is factorial.  Thus, if you have to order 6 statements it is, 6 X 5 X 4 X 3 X 2 X 1 = 720.  That is to say, their are 720 possible combinations, so your chances of getting it right are 1 in 720.  After 6, the odds rise very steeply!  So 8 items is 1 in 985,520 and 10 items is a massive 3.6 million (3,628,800).   So read the small print carefully before you invest a large amount on the qualifier as some T & C state that the prize will be only be awarded if your order exactly matches that of the judges.

Crosswords

Crosswords are the most common type of word puzzle in the world. They usually take the form of a square grid of black and white squares; the aim is to fill the white squares with letters, forming words (or word phrases) reading across and down, by solving clues. The black squares have no letters and are used to separate words.

When used in competitions the completed crossword usually yields highlighted letters.   When these are rearranged they produce a further word, which is usually all you need to send to the competition address.  Such crosswords are common in magazines and are great fun and relatively simple to do.  They are a good opportunity for the whole family to participate in something together.

Word Searches

A word search is a word game that consists of seemingly random letters arranged in a square grid. The object is to find and circle all of the hidden words.  Words may be hidden vertically, horizontally or diagonally.  Sometimes a list of  words is provided, but more challenging puzzles let you work it out for yourself. Many word searches also have a common theme to the hidden words.  They are often found in consumer competitions and magazines.
