Photography Competitions

Often poorly subscribed, photographic competitions offer a higher chance of success for those who take the trouble.  Most people consider such competitions as specialist, and feel that they don't have a chance, but nothing could be further from the truth.  Everyone is capable of producing a worthy photograph, so you be ready with your camera to take advantage of the reduced competition.

Where Will You Find Them.

One of the best places is of course photographic shops.  Jessops for example, frequently runs such competitions, so keep an eye out there.  They also run courses and can supply books to help you improve your techniques.  Another source is photographic magazines, but here you will be up against professionals and committed amateurs, so your chances of winning will be substantially reduced.  One of the best types of photographic competition are the ones you find on products.  Marmite and Insight Travel Guides have recently run such competitions and Cadbury's Creme Eggs have been almost predictable with their regular "How Do You Eat Yours?" competition.  Such competitions allow you to have great fun with your camera.  The more outrageous and unusual the better, this is certainly not the territory of the professional, and lets us all have a chance.

How To Win
  1. Try to take your camera with you wherever you go.  If you have a mobile phone, it may be time to upgrade to a camera phone.
  2. Make sure the product you are promoting is a big as possible and that its name is clearly visible.
  3. Go for the sympathy vote, a cute child with an eye-patch is bound to capture the attention of the judges.
  4. Humour is another winner.  But keep it apt and don't go over the top.
  5. Finally, remember quality counts no matter how good your idea, it is not going to win if it is blurred, dark, or poorly posed.
