Miscellaneous
Competitions
So many competitions, and still
there are more. Here is just a brief look at some other
types of competition out there.
Recipe
Competitions
Here's a chance for you to show
off your creativity in the kitchen by inventing some new
delicacy. It's not as difficult as it sounds. Just
remember all those times when you try to follow a recipe only
to find you're missing an ingredient and so end up
substituting something else. The result is usually (???)
just as delicious, but original. If you take the process
one step further and look for opportunities to diverge, then
you might produce some new classic. Then all you need to
do is look for opportunities to use your recipe in a
competition.
Magazines are usually a good
source of such competitions alternatively look on ingredient
packets themselves, you are bound to be able to include
the ingredient in your speciality to give it eligibility.
In some competitions you may be required to supply a
photograph, so you will need to use your best styling
techniques. In other cases finalists may be invited to a
"cook-off". Don't be afraid of such competitions as the
venues are usually worth the effort and if you practise well
at home you will have no problems re-creating your dish in
unfamiliar surroundings. At the end of the process
however, you will be so sick of your menu, that you will never
want to eat it again! |

Talent Shows
Talent
shows are great fun, and television companies recognise that
such competitions also attract viewers and make money. The
public want something new and different, and the more dreadful
or funny the performance, the better the ratings.
Competitions such as Opportunity Knocks and New Faces and more
recently Pop Idol and The X Factor attract countless would-be
pop stars. The prize may be a short cut to fame and fortune but it
does come at a price.
On the positive side the potential rewards are
great, they will give you experience of TV and recording
studios, plenty of media exposure and big prizes including
cash, luxury goods and recording contracts. But this has to
be balanced against long queues and the likelihood of
elimination in the pre-audition screening process. In the face
of the huge competition you may never actually get to see the
celebrity judges. Additionally, you will have to be prepared
to be filmed “warts and all”; remember the show is being
produced for the benefit of the viewers and not you! And
finally you need to have a thick skin to protect you from the
criticism of the likes of Simon Cowell.
If you’re still determined to give it a go, visit TV
websites where forthcoming competitions are advertised,
alternatively keep your eyes open in the music or national
press.
